Reconstructing Industrial Software using Qt and QML

In the realm of measurement instruments manufacturing, German industry leader OPW faced a challenge with their world-class software. The software's domain-specific language (DSL) was becoming a complex enigma for operating technicians. Routine reconfigurations or minor changes to a measuring station required the presence of an external expert. In certain extreme situations, production came to a standstill until the measuring equipment could be adjusted. The mounting costs and time spent on these operations demanded a solution.

Innovation in motion: the strategy and solution

KDAB was entrusted with transforming OPW's software into a more user-friendly and easily understandable tool for manufacturing technicians, while preserving its integrity.

OPW and KDAB decided to reconstruct an existing software using Qt and QML, allowing them to re-engineer the UI for greater clarity and usability. The newly created, user-friendly DSL was structured so adjustments did not require advanced programming skills. KDAB ensured that the language used to describe the machine's hardware, the measurement and calibration process, and the user interface were one and the same. This allowed in-house technicians to make necessary changes independently.

Enhanced efficiency

The fruits of KDAB's involvement were manifold. The improved software eliminated the need to reinstall or recompile software after adjustments. For OPW, their already world-class products were significantly enhanced. For their customers, the software offered substantial benefits and a competitive edge.

The revamped application was user-friendly, requiring no advanced programming skills. It was flexible, allowing for last-minute customization on-site. It was more efficient, reducing the likelihood of production halts. It was cost-effective, negating the need for external experts. And above all else, it ensured that the machines kept running even during adjustments.

Constructed with Qt, the software was formulated to be efficient to develop, easy to maintain, and compatible with any platform. This marked a win for both OPW and their customers.
